Think about how we rate each other online… likes, retweets, follows. On Uber, we riders and drivers rate each other. Often people will decide to use a driver or pick up a rider based on his/her rating. What if we continue in this direction? What if we rate each other on every interaction? What if we grant privileges and access to things based on our ratings? This episode deals with these questions. It’s some powerful social commentary!

 12th Grade:

Skill: The Fake Out

Try Purposely misleading the reader. This is especially effective while writing a Tribute Piece. Make the reader think you are going to say something negative but quickly turn it into a positive. This is a common technique during a roast or any other type of speech (best man/maide of honor speech, eulogy…). “Johnny has always been a pain to work with. He always needs everything to be perfect and it can drive you crazy. But that is exactly why it’s been so great to work with him all these years.”

The Beach Boys do the Fake Out well in “God Only Knows.” The song starts with “I may not always love you” which sounds negative, but it is then turned into a beautiful declaration of love.

The Beach Boys – God only knows from Bill Feruglio on Vimeo.

I may not always love you
But long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I’ll make you so sure about it
God only knows what I’d be without you
If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on, believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would livin’ do me
God only knows what I’d be without you
God only knows what I’d be without you
If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on, believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would livin’ do me
God only knows what I’d be without you

12th Grade:

Today you will have some time to work on your reading and writing at a computer. Make sure you are being productive and hitting on the 12th Grade Reading and Writing Standards

If you are completely stuck, consider production a Social Commentary piece.  Think of something that annoys you, and think of how that reflects a larger societal issue. (For example: Someone not saying “thank you” after you hold the door for them might reflect how people are so consumed with their own lives that they do not notice how they affect each other or that people feel entitled and don’t appreciate or even realize when others go out of their way to help them)
