Quarterly Exam Today; Research Paper and Notebook Tomorrow

Today is our in-class quarterly. Any notes for preparation can be found in yesterday’s post.

Tomorrow we will be back in A206 to work on our research paper one last time!

Notebooks will be checked tomorrow. You are graded on quantity. 10Pts for every 3 pages. 30 pages equals a 100.

Today we will be preparing for the quarterly exam tomorrow.

9th Grade: Regents Task 3 Practice

Your exam is very similar to part 3 of the English Regents that you will take in 11th grade. We will be doing a practice exam in our notebooks. You will receive notes on what is expected of you, as well as a template for the essay, which you can use anytime you answer this questions.

12th Grade: Carpe Diem

Read the poem “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time” by Robert Herrick

In your notebook answer the following questions:

  1. Describe the speaker? Who is this person? (Keep in mind the speaker and the poet should not be confused. A 6 year old boy can write a poem from the perspective of his 40 year old father).
  2. What is the message of the poem?
  3. Find and explain any metaphors.
  4. Find and explain any symbolism.
  5. What is the author’s attitude?
  6. In your opinion what is the most important line of each poem?

  1. What is the message Robin Williams’ character is trying to teach the students?

9th Grade: Topic Sentences and Outlining

Topic Sentences

We will take some notes on writing Topic Sentences:topic sentences TOPIC SENTENCES

Outlining

Post an outline on Kidblog. Plan for at least 4 body paragraphs. At least one of them should explain and refute an opinion that opposes your thesis.

Use the following format:

Thesis Statement:

Body Paragraph 1:

  • Topic Sentence
  • Evidence (quote from an article, with parenthetical citation)

Body Paragraph 2:

  • Topic Sentence
  • Evidence (quote from an article, with parenthetical citation)

Body Paragraph 3:

  • Topic Sentence
  • Evidence (quote from an article, with parenthetical citation)

Body Paragraph 4:

  • Topic Sentence
  • Evidence (quote from an article, with parenthetical citation)

12th Grade: Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing-express the meaning of a writer, speaker, another person using different words.

When Paraphrasing you must still use a Parenthetical Citation to give the author credit.

*In your research paper you must use paraphrasing at least twice*

In your outline, be sure to include some information using paraphrasing.

By the end of the day, your outline should have:

  • Your thesis statement
  • At least 4 topic sentences (these are the topics for your body paragraphs)
  • A quote from your articles to support each of your topic sentences (make sure you include a parenthetical citation)
  • 2 paraphrases of information from your articles in any of your topic sentences

9th Grade: Thesis and Works Cited Page

On Kidblog, create a post that has your thesis statement and a works cited page. Title your post “Thesis and Works Cited Page.”

The format for a Works Cited Page entry is:

Author’s last name, first name. “Article Title.” Publication. Date Published. Date Accessed. .

Your Works Cited Page should have 6 entries. The 4 I gave you (listed below) and the 2 you found on Monday.

Make sure all of your Work Cited Page entries look like the one above. Notice the following:
