“I Have A Dream”

Today we will be looking at Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.


12th Grade: Create a SOAPSTONE for the speech, in your notebook.

9th Grade: Answer the following questions and be sure to give evidence from the speech to support your answer.

  1. What is MLK’s main purpose in the speech?
  2. What literary device is King using when he references “Five score years ago” and the “Emancipation Proclamation?”
  3. On page 122, paragraph 2, what does King mean by “a check which has come back marked ‘insufficient funds’?” What literary device is at work in this section?
  4. What is King’s main point in the last paragraph on page 122?
  5. Why does King use so much repetition? Give an example of his repetition and explain its purpose.
  6. Based on his speech, explain King’s personality (Characterization).
