A Date Which Will Live in Infamy

75 years ago from tomorrow, the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor. Today we will analyze President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speech to congress. Here is the transcript, FDR Pearl Harbor, followed by the video.

Create a SOAPSTONE Analysis

In your notebook, I’d like you to create a SOAPSTONE analysis for this speech. Be as detailed as possible in your answers.

Skill: Repetition

Repetition is a technique for emphasizing ideas. By repeating a phrasing, sentence structure, or idea it emphasizes that idea and leaves a lasting impression on the reader’s mind. Do not confuse this with being redundant, which is repeating an idea for no good reason or due to lazy writing!

Example: FDR’s Pearl Harbor Speech

“Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.”

This repetition is effective because it reminded American’s of the severity of the attacks.

Example: The chorus of any song. Often the main idea of a song is in its chorus.
