Let Kids Sleep Later:

Read the following article and answer each question in your notebook.  For each answer refer to specific examples from the text to support your answer.

1. In what ways does the author use her personal experience and expertise to show the reader she is a person worth listening to?

2. What are some problems that can result from a lack of sleep in teenagers?

3. Can we trust the statistics the author presents? How do you know?

4. What reasons does the author give as to why the research has not been put into practice?

5. How does the author feel about the future of school start times? Is she optimistic or Pessimistic?

6. What is the author’s purpose for writing this article?

12th Grade:

Poetry

Read the following poems Mother to Son and Still I Rise by Maya Angelou and answer each question in your notebook.  For each answer refer to specific examples from the text to support your answer.

  1. Describe the speaker? Who is this person? (Keep in mind the speaker and the poet should not be confused. A 6 year old boy can write a poem from the perspective of his 40 year old father).
  2. What is the message of the poem?
  3. Find and explain any metaphors.
  4. Find and explain any symbolism.
  5. What is the author’s attitude?
  6. In your opinion what is the most important line of each poem?
