Research Papers are Due Today!

Today we are in the lab to put any last minute, final touches on the research paper.  Your printed copy is due today in class.

Computer Lab to Finish Research Papers

Today and tomorrow we will be in the computer lab a206 to work on our research papers.  Come to class prepared with articles, rough drafts, outlines, etc!

Research Paper Rough Draft Due; Formatting and Grading

Today we are in class to discuss formatting and grading of your research paper.

Your rough drafts will be checked today.  

I will go over the rubric for grading (found in your packet).  We will also discuss the example papers in the packet that show how your paper should be formatted.  Use these examples as a guide.  Your paper should look exactly the same.

After we are finished, check over your paper and give yourself a grade based on your work so far.  Then exchange your paper with someone else in the class and examine their paper as he/she examines yours.  By the end of the day you should have a clear idea on what needs to be done to get the highest grade possible.

Tomorrow and Friday we will be in the computer lab a206 to finish our papers.

Outlines Due; Writing Body Paragraphs; Work on Rough Drafts

Today, outlines for the research paper are due.

Writing Body Paragraphs

Skill- Topic Sentence: The first sentence in a body paragraph.  It states what the paragraph will be about and is the point you will be proving in the paragraph.  This sentence should be a direct reason why your thesis is true.

Working on Rough Drafts

Your typed rough draft is due, in class, on Wednesday.  On Wednesday we will discuss the finer grading points and do some peer editing to help get the highest grade possible.  Today you will have time to start your rough drafts, and tomorrow we will be in the computer lab to start typing them.

Song Piece Due Friday; Research Paper Outline Due Monday

Today and tomorrow we will be in the computer lab in room a206.  Here you can work on your Song Piece or your Research Paper’s outline, or both.  I will check notebooks today.  I am just looking for evidence that you’ve made good use of the last 3 days in class (outlines, rough drafts, notes, planning, etc.).  This should be an easy grade!

Song Piece is due tomorrow, printed out by the end of class.

Research Paper Outline is due Monday.  This can be done neatly in your notebook or printed out.

Conclusion Paragraphs; Work on Song Piece/Research Paper

Today we will briefly discuss conclusion paragraphs.  You have notes in your research paper packet. Essentially a conclusion paragraph does the following:

  • Firmly restate your thesis statement.  Don’t repeat it word for word, but remind your reader what the point you just proved in your paper was.
  • Quickly recap major points that prove thesis.  No major details, just a quick list of your points.
  • Relate the topic of your paper to the “big picture.” How is this important in life, to people, to the world?
  • Does not give any new evidence.  Your conclusion is not a place for more quotes, new points or extra information. If you have any of these, put them in a new body paragraph.

Tomorrow we will be in computer lab a206.  I will be checking your notebook for the week.  I am just looking for evidence that you used the last three days of class productively.  (Notes on songs/poems, outlines, rough drafts, etc.)

Writing Introduction Paragraphs; Work on Projects

Today there will be a brief discussion on writing introduction paragraphs (notes found in your research paper packet).  From there, you will have time to work on research paper stuff, as well as your song piece.

Outlining; Song Piece

Outlining Your Research Paper

Today there will be some brief notes about outlining (found in your packet).  An outline is just a plan on what each paragraph in your paper will be about, and the evidence you plan to use.  For your intro, simply write down your thesis.  Then for each body paragraph, write down the topic you wish to discuss and any evidence from the poem and articles that you can use to support that idea.

Song Piece

During this week, research paper work has been slowed slightly to work on a Song Piece.  For this piece you will choose any song and show why that song is important to you.  The notes and requirements are here Song Piece Overview.

Don’t Fall Behind!

At this point, you should have:

  • A Poem you will be writing about
  • Thesis statement about a theme in your poem
  • Articles about your poem or topic your thesis is discussing
  • Some notes/highlights on your article (pick out what you plan to use in your paper)
