Read and Discuss Ben Jonson’s “On My First Son.”

On My First Son
by Ben Jonson

Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy ;
My sin was too much hope of thee, lov’d boy.
Seven years thou wert lent to me, and I thee pay,
Exacted by thy fate, on the just day.
Oh, could I lose all father now ! For why
Will man lament the state he should envy?
To have so soon ‘scaped world’s and flesh’s rage,
And if no other misery, yet age !
Rest in soft peace, and, asked, say, Here doth lie
Ben Jonson his best piece of poetry.
For whose sake henceforth all his vows be such
As what he loves may never like too much.

Consider creating a tribute (or anti-tribute) pieces for your next writing piece.

Discuss writing requirement for reading responses.  Download the hand out here:reading responses ideas

New Skill: Epistophe– the last word repeater.  Repeating the last word or phrases of your sentences.  This gets the readers (or if giving a speech, the audience) to complete your sentences, making them feel like active participants in your writing.  When people know what is going to come next, they tend to agree with it more often.

Example here

Newt Gingrich on the Occupy Wall Street movement:  “They take over a public park they didn’t pay for, to go nearby to use bathrooms they didn’t pay for, to beg for food from places they don’t want to pay for.”
